The History Of The Village Of Pinehurst

In 1895, philanthropist James W. Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of desolate, sandy land in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Once a beautiful pine forest, the land had been ravaged as trees were harvested to be used for building materials and in the production turpentine.

Tufts saw potential in the devastated landscape. He envisioned creating a retreat where middle-class Americans could recuperate from the ailments of the time. His plans included the creation of a New England-style village that would be green year-round and easily accessible by winding walkways.

Today, more than 100 years later, The Village of Pinehurst continues to provide visitors and residents with an escape from the hustle and bustle. Stepping into the Village can seem like meandering through the pages of a history book. It's charm and beauty are at once captivating and nurturing.
